Fort Stony Batter Heritage Park

A deep dive into Waiheke's wartime history.

Stony Batter Listings 2560x1440 1

Explore the underworld of Waiheke’s WWII past.

Tucked into the remote eastern end of Waiheke Island lies one of New Zealand’s most remarkable military engineering feats—Stony Batter Heritage Park. This Heritage 1 Listed WWII Coastal Defence Fortress is a subterranean labyrinth of tunnels and chambers, carved by hand over 1.2km to protect Auckland from coastal invasion.

Built to withstand direct enemy attack and chosen for its sweeping views across the Hauraki Gulf, this architectural marvel has been lovingly restored after decades of neglect. Guided tours now reveal the secrets of the plotting rooms, gun turrets, magazine chambers, and command bunkers, offering a deep dive into the site's wartime history and construction.

But it’s not just history that draws people here—Stony Batter also hosts art exhibitions, concerts, and private events in its unique underground spaces. Outside, the surrounding reserve offers coastal walking trails, picnic spots, and native wildlife, including cheeky Weka and grazing sheep from the neighbouring Man O’ War station.
