Waiheke Island isn’t just for wine lovers, it’s a natural playground for families.

With wide beaches, upgraded playgrounds, kid-friendly dining, and plenty of space to run, it’s easy to fill a day with fun. Whether your kids are little adventurers or teens looking for bigger thrills, this itinerary gives you a relaxed but varied family day out.

We recommend booking lunch spots ahead to avoid disappointment, especially during weekends and school holidays.

Adventure, Play & Ice Cream Along the Way

Morning – Beach & Play

Start the day at Onetangi Beach, where the wide stretch of sand is perfect for swimming, sandcastle competitions, or a quick game of beach cricket.

Late Morning – Playground Fun

Head over to Little Oneroa Beach, where younger kids will love the upgraded playground and parents can enjoy the BBQ area and calm swimming conditions.

Lunch – Choose Your Adventure

For younger kids, head to The Heke, where the inflatable jumping pillow, Tonka trucks, and lawn games keep them entertained while you relax with a platter or local brew. For older kids and teens, choose Wild Estate, where archery and outdoor games add a dash of action.

Afternoon – Treats & Explore

Wander into Oneroa Village for boutique shops and a scoop (or two) from Island Gelato.

Evening – Family Dinner

End the day with a relaxed meal at Charlie Farley’s, a kid-friendly restaurant right by the beach — the perfect spot to unwind before heading back to the ferry.

Make it 2 Days

Extend your family adventure with even more outdoor fun:

  • Whakanewha Regional Park (Cascade Walk) – Easy trails through wetlands and native bush, with plenty of space for kids to explore.
  • Stony Batter Historic Reserve – A fascinating World War II coastal defence site with tunnels to explore (best for older kids).
  • EcoZip Adventures – Fly through the air on dual ziplines over vineyards and native bush — a favourite for adventurous teens.
